National Restaurateurs’ Dinner At Shakespeare’s Globe
8 April 2020
The 2019 National Restaurateurs’ Dinner is a joint fundraising event in aid of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, Academy of Food and Wine Service & The Wine Guild of the United Kingdom.
We celebrated the 31st anniversary of the National Restaurateurs’ Dinner on the 27 March 2019 at Shakespeare’s Globe. This spectacular fundraising event began with a Laurent-Perrier Champagne reception and was hosted by a team of leading chefs; Steve Drake, Jeff Galvin, Angela Hartnett, Allan Pickett and Ben Tish of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts.
The National Restaurateurs’ Dinner was started in 1988 by Roy Ackerman CBE, this event is the annual joint fundraising initiative of three of the industry’s most prominent and respected organisations. Each year we combine our efforts to organise what has become a must-attend celebration event for our sector, whilst raising funds to maintain our industry-focused education and training initiatives.
The three associations share the same ideals for maintaining the profile and esteem of our industry, whilst working continuously towards setting higher standards both front and back of house; we share in the philosophy that education and training is key to securing the future. The proceeds from the event are shared equally between the three organisations and entirely invested in the various educational programmes which include: the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ Annual Awards of Excellence, the Master of Culinary Arts, Chefs Apprenticeship Programmes and Professional Restaurant Service and Management Apprenticeship Programme; the Academy of Food and Wine Service’s ‘Licence to Work’, online modular programme, their advanced course ‘Performance Improvement Programme’ and many more Institute qualifications and CPD programmes and The Wine Guild of the United Kingdom’s International Sommelier Competition Scholarships and National Sommelier foundation training programme.
However, the dinner is not just a fundraising event. It is an opportunity for people with common interests to meet and to support the catering industry, which plays such an important part in our culture. Not only does the hospitality industry represent one of the country’s largest employers, but food and wine are entwined in our daily lives and if, by enjoying the two at the Dinner, we can also raise money to improve training standards, we will have the satisfaction of knowing that we have been of service not merely to our industry but to society as a whole.
To mark the Silver Jubilee of the National Restaurateurs’ Dinner in 2014 we appointed six Honorary Patrons of the event, who have contributed so much over the years and continue to do so. They were: Roy Ackerman CBE; Michael Druitt; Sir Rocco Forte; Patrick Gwynn-Jones MBE; Ramon Pajares OBE; and Richard Shepherd CBE. Since then we have launched the NRD Patron’s Scheme, we are delighted that the following have subsequently joined the scheme and become Patrons: Jane Asher; Geoff Booth FIH; Karen Karen Brown; Brian Clivaz FIH; Michael Druitt; Ciarán Fahy FIH MI; Roland Fasel; Sir Rocco Forte FIH; Professor David Foskett MBE CMA FIH BED HONS; Jeremy Goring MIH; Patrick Gwynn-Jones MBE; Julia Hands MBE; Tim Jones; Stephen Moss CBE, FIH; Kevin Oakes; Ramon Pajares OBE, FIH; Tracey Rogers; Richard Shepherd CBE, FIH; Alastair Storey OBE, FIH; Mike Sunley; Bill Toner FIH; Ed Vokes .
